The curved back and scrolled arms covered in buttoned crimson leather, with reeded seatrail and arm supports, on reeded tapering legs, the front caps and castors replaced, the back later upholstered, the back castors original, repair to front left leg

Lot Essay

The 'lyre' pattern of arms and seat rail of this library bergere relates to a pair of bergeres sold by the Executors of the Estate of the late 2nd Viscount Camrose, Hackwood Park, Christie's house sale, 20 April 1998, lot 55. Closely related chairs also feature in a number of Gillow's early 19th Century room elevations preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum (E.47-1952). A similar bergere was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 24 September 1998, lot 157 and another also sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 12 November 1998, lot 429.
