Lot Essay

A closely related double-aperture table wine-cooler in brass-bound mahogany is illustrated in R. Butler and G. Walkling, Wine Antiques, Woodbridge, 1986, pl. 112. Wine-coolers of this type were executed by Gillows of London and Lancaster and a pattern for this cooler, named an 'ice pail', features in Gillows' pattern-book for 30th March 1794 (Westminster City Archive).
