Lot Essay

A compass-fronted wall-lantern of this form, but with a pronounced pagoda-topped back, and datable to about 1740, was lent from Wallington Hall, Northumberland, to the exhibition at Temple Newsam House, Leeds, Country House Lighting, 1992, cat. no. 53.
