Provenance
Isaac Israels visited Indies in 1921-22 to meet his friend and fellow artist Jan Veth. He didn't particularly like his stay, but nevertheless he was very productive. Israels hardly studied the local circumstances of life, neither did he penetrate their culture and notions, he simply recorded what he saw. But then he was a loyal adherent of the principle of 'Art for Art's sake'.
From about 1914 Israels has been associating with Javanese students and artists, among whom the celebrated dancer of royal descent, Raden Mas Jodjana. During his stay in the Indies these earlier contacts would gain him access to the kratons of Mangkunegara and the Susuhuhan in Solo, where he painted portraits of many local dignitaries. Although the sitter of the present lot is unidentified, it is a clear example of a portrait of a local man of nobility.
