Lot Essay

After World War II in the Pacific was over, Bali started turning into a tourist haven. More and more wealthy tourists from Europe, Australia, Singapore and America flocked to the idyllic island. Most travellers to Bali were warmly received by the painter and his wife Pollok. And in many cases the visitors purchased either a painting or a pastel. The period 1947 to 1957 was therefore very fruitful for Le Mayeur. He was clearly prospering.
Although the artist became physically weaker and weaker in the fifties, his spirit remained unbroken. He set to work with feverish and passionate energy, producing dozens of paintings and pastels. The splendid colours of his pictures remained. His palette was as bright as ever; orange, red and yellow and also green were now his favourites. He remained the colourist pur sang he always had been.
The above painting is a very strong and mature example of this later, solid work of the post-war oeuvre by Mayeur.

The authenticity of this lot has kindly been confirmed by Drs Cathinka Huizing after first hand examination.
