Lot Essay

The first Professor of Pathological Anatomy in Paris, Cruveilhier here gives the earliest description of multiple sclerosis (in volume II), as well as a key description of "Cruveilhier's palsy." Although his general system of pathology, which erroneously taught that 'phlebitis dominates all pathology,' was later discredited by Virchow, the plates to this work are recognised as "some of the finest illustrations of gross pathology ever made" [Heirs of Hippocrates]
