Lot Essay

Jean Henri Samuel Formey (1711-1797), the recipient of Meckel's gift. was himself the author of a number of medical works including Essai sur la perfection and Systeme du vrai bonheur (both Utrecht, 1751), Mélanges philosophiques (Leiden, 1754) and Trostgründe für Personen, die ein sieches Leben führen (Leipzig, 1758). The friendship between the two doctors must have been warm for, after Meckel's death in 1774, he also published Eloge de Mr. le Professeur Meckel (Berlin, 1775).
