Lot Essay

Soemmerring's Icones Embryonum Humanorum was intended as a supplementary volume to Hunter's work which had only dealt with the latter part of pregnancy. Soemmerring's work deals with the appearance of the embryo during the early stages of pregnancy. In the view of Choulant/Frank, "This ranks among the most valuable works of Soemmerring and is even today useful and highly appreciated. Both the drawing and the engraving show admirable execution" (see illustration).
