The greatest of the Monro family, Alexander is remembered in particular for this work on the study of the interior and exterior of the brain. He "advanced the study of the subject by making several original discoveries, the most famous being the foramen connecting the lateral and third ventricles of the brain, thereafter known as the 'foramen of Monro'" [DSB]
