Lot Essay

Berthollet, in this work, "was probably the first chemist to perform an exhaustive investigation of how physical conditions affect chemical reactions, creating a molecular model of matter to explain the effects of temperature and density on chemical reactions" (Norman). Macquer's work, though including an account of compound substances, is a practical guide to laboratory procedures (in fact, forming the companion work to his Elemens de Chymie Théorique, Paris, 1749).
