Lot Essay

Two versions by Liotard are recorded, one in Geneva Museum of Art and the other in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. The present picture is a reverse image which would suggest that it was most probably taken from an engraving, possibly the mezzotint by Richard Houstan (N.P.G. D2533).
