8o (197 x 125 mm). (Some offsetting and dampstaining.) Early 19th century English red half roan, marbled boards, spine gilt-lettered (some rubbing, especially at joints). Provenance: J.E.G. Rebello da Fontoura (bookplate); early ownership inscriptions of N. Roberts and Jos. C. Scully; Harrison D. Horblit (bookplate, sold Christie's East, Feb 16, 1994, lot 239).

PRICED in a contemporary hand. Bacon's vast library, one of the largest of the time, was sold in seventy-nine evening sessions. Consisting mainly of books printed in England, France, and Italy during the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries, the majority of the lots sold for only a few shillings.
