PRICED in a contemporary hand. Dr. Mead the best-known English physician of his time; his patients included George I, Sir Isaac Newton, Sir Robert Walpole, Alexander Pope, and Bishop Burnett. His library was one of the largest English libraries of the day; it consisted of more than 100,000 volumes on the various branches of knowledge and took 56 days to disperse. The sale attracted interest even in France (De Boze was a buyer) and marked the beginning of the steep rise in prices for antiquarian books. Quaritch, states that the sale realized £5499.4.5 (DNB: £5,518.10.11), the present copy has the contemporary manuscript note: "Sum Total of both Sales £5540.7.6 including Book-Cases."
