PRICED WITH BUYERS' NAMES, in a contemporary hand, ruled in red. Alchorne, Master of the Mint, had a small but most remarkable library, including nine Caxtons and the 1460 Catholicon. It was purchased by Payne, who, in 1806, offered it to Lord Spencer for £1,200 and sold it to Thomas Johnes, after the former had refused it. In 1813, Johnes sold it to the same Lord Spencer for £3,500. In this sale, Spencer sold numerous duplicates, often replacing superior Alchorne copies with his own inferior ones, and other books of no interest to him. Thomas Frognall Dibdin who often acted as Spencer's librarian, himself catalogued the following fifteenth century items, signed with a "D": 121-124, 127-130, 132-138, 146, 152, 154-158. The sale was attended by some of the outstanding English collectors who bid themselves, such as the Duke of Devonshire, Heber, Lord Clive, Sir Masterman Sykes and Bolland. See De Ricci, p.74.
