BUCKINGHAM, Richard Temple Nugent Brydges Chandos Grenville, First Duke of (1776-1839) -- Catalogue of the Important Collection of Manuscripts from Stowe. London: Sotheby's, 11 June 1849.

8o (214 x 142 mm). Folding frontispiece reproducing an ancient Irish manuscript and one folding plate (some spotting and offsetting). 19th- century blue half morocco, t.e.g., original wrappers bound-in (worn, covers detached).

The sale of the Stowe manuscripts never took place, as the collection was bought en bloc by the fourth Earl of Ashburnham, who in turn sold them to the British Museum in 1883 for £45,000. The library included Anglo-Saxon charters, ancient deeds and register books, the Psalter of Alfred the Great, and the original Wardrobe book of Edward II, as well as a rich collection of ancient Irish manuscripts.
