DANIEL, George (1789-1864) -- Catalogue of the Most Valuable, Interesting, and Highly Important Library of the late George Daniel, Esq. of Canonbury, together with his collections of original Drawings and Engraved Portraits of Distinguished Actors and Actresses. London: Sotheby's, 20 July 1864.

8o (239 x 158 mm). Contemporary full green morocco gilt (minor rubbing to spine ends and corners).

PRICED WITH BUYERS' NAMES in a contemporary hand. Daniel, a now almost forgotten satirical and miscellaneous writer, achieved eminence as a book collector, whose "Elizabethan and Shakespearean library was one of the choicest in private hands and when sold...brought no less than £15,865. His handsome copy of the First Folio fetched £716.2s and was obtained by Baroness Burdett-Coutts. At her sale...1922 Dr. Rosenbach had to give £8,600 for it; it is now in the Folger Collection. As for the Quartos, all handsomely bound with Daniel's cipher on the sides, they were divided between the British Museum and a new collector, Henry Huth" (De Ricci). The Fourth Folio (lot 1419), later the Daniel - Edwardes - Perry - Bemis - Berland copy, sold at Christie's New York, Oct 8, 2001, lot 103, for $240,000. F.S. Ellis, who still knew Daniel personally, gives a very detailed account of the sale and its principal prices, in Quaritch's Dictionary, as does W.Y. Fletcher. De Ricci, p. 149.
