PRICED WITH BUYERS' NAMES in a contemporary hand. Daniel, a now almost forgotten satirical and miscellaneous writer, achieved eminence as a book collector, whose "Elizabethan and Shakespearean library was one of the choicest in private hands and when sold...brought no less than £15,865. His handsome copy of the First Folio fetched £716.2s and was obtained by Baroness Burdett-Coutts. At her sale...1922 Dr. Rosenbach had to give £8,600 for it; it is now in the Folger Collection. As for the Quartos, all handsomely bound with Daniel's cipher on the sides, they were divided between the British Museum and a new collector, Henry Huth" (De Ricci). The Fourth Folio (lot 1419), later the Daniel - Edwardes - Perry - Bemis - Berland copy, sold at Christie's New York, Oct 8, 2001, lot 103, for $240,000. F.S. Ellis, who still knew Daniel personally, gives a very detailed account of the sale and its principal prices, in Quaritch's Dictionary, as does W.Y. Fletcher. De Ricci, p. 149.
