"In the early 'forties, the third Earl of Gosford had formed at Gosford Castle, in Ireland, a large and extremely beautiful library which was sold by private contract in 1878 to the London bookseller James Toovey... the history, topography, natural history and the important series of books on large paper were dispersed by Puttick and Simpson (21 April 1884), the total for 3,364 lots being over £11,000" (De Ricci).
