OXFORD, Bodleian Library -- John VERNEUIL. Catalogus interpretum S. Scripturae, iuxta numerorum ordinem, quo extant in Bibliotheca Bodleiana...editio correcta... Oxford: John Lichfield, 1635.
4o (194 x 146 mm). (Lacking first blank [A1].) 19th-century red half morocco, largely uncut. Provenance: some annotations in an early hand.
An expanded version of pages 163-179 of Thomas James's Catalogus (Oxford, 1605), the first Bodleian catalogue. "A subject index conceived in an entirely different and now somewhat unfamiliar way is seen in Thomas James's list of commentators on the Bible in the first Bodleian catalogue of 1605. In the early seventeenth century and for a long time after, men based their political, ethical, or economic discussions upon a Biblical context. Consequently, a list of commentators on the Bible was at the same time a guide for writers of sermons, an index to Biblical criticism and in some ways a general subject index. Though he did not reprint it in the Bodleian catalogue of 1620, John Verneuil (1583-1647), a sub-librarian during James's career and later, issued a similar work separately as the Catalogus interpretum S. Scripturae (Oxford, 1635)..." (Taylor, pp. 52-53). Later editions appeared in 1637 and 1642. VERY RARE. STC 14448.
