GUICHENON, Samuel (1607-1664) & Pierre BULLIOUD (1588-1651) -- Paul-Auguste ALLUT. Lyons: [printed for Nicolas Yemeniz], Imprimerie de Louis Perrin, 1851.

8o (221 x 145 mm). Lithographed frontispiece (arms of Guichenon) and a facsimile plate, accompanied with an explanation printed on tissue paper. Contemporary blue-black morocco by Trautz-Bauzonnet, Yemeniz's gilt monogram repeated six times on spine, original pictorial wrappers bound in, edges gilt (joints lightly rubbed). Provenance: Nicolas Yemeniz (bookplate, binding); Joseph Nouvellet (bookplate); The Grolier Club (bookplate, withdrawn stamp).

ONE OF THE TWO COPIES ON HEAVY "PAPIER D'HOLLANDE" PRINTED FOR YEMENIZ, at whose expense the work was produced, and rather curiously, he has dedicated the above copy to himself. It was considered at its time a masterpiece of printing, "executé avec un art et un goût qui rapellent les plus élégantes productions des anciennes presses lyonnaises" (review in the Bulletin du Bibliophile, of which a two-leaf extract is bound in at end). Allut summarizes the 2,548 documents concerning Lyons from the ninth century onwards, copied into thirty-five folio volumes (but also including some originals), by Guichenon, historian of Eastern France and historiographer to the Duke of Savoy. It is preceded by an index to the "Symphorianus" of Bullioud. Cioranescu, 4,279.
