Lancelot was an archaeologist, historian and genealogist, and Inspector of the Collège Royal, who contributed to Bayle's Dictionnaire critique and assisted Mabillon in his researches. His library contains significant holdings in French history and heraldry, along with manuscripts. "The Bulletin du bibliophile claims that Lanceot bequeathed his entire library to the Bibliothèque du roi, but this appears to be incorrect, as Lonchamp records that many of the books were purchased by La Vallière. Franklin and Ledos note that Lancelot donated 206 manuscripts to the Bibliothèque royale during his lifetime, and Balayé states that the Bibliothèque du roi purchased the remainder from Lancelot in 1733. According to Bléchet, the manuscripts in this catalogue, apparently acquired by Lancelot in the intervening seven years, were also bought by the Bibliothèque du roi" (North).
