8o (195 x 122 mm). Frontispiece portrait of Rothelin by Jean-Nicolas Tardieu fils after C. Coypel, Rothelin's large engraved arms on title. (Short marginal tape repair on 2D1.) Contemporary Parisian crimson morocco gilt, triple gilt fillets on sides, spine richly gilt-decorated and -lettered, comb-marbled endpapers, edges gilt, possibly by Derome le Jeune (repairs to joints); red cloth folding case. PRICED THROUGHOUT in a contemporary hand. Rothelin was one of the preeminent French book collectors of the 18th century: he had his books, which included many large-paper copies, bound by the outstanding binders of the time, such as Boyer, Padeloup and Duseuil. The most spectacular part of his library was the collection of illuminated and historical manuscripts, largely from the collection of Nicolas-Joseph Foucault, including the Serbourne Missal and the Bible of Charles V. This is considered one of the best sale catalogues compiled by Gabriel Martin, and is one of twenty-two with an index. Martin explains in his preface why he did not base his catalogue on that compiled for the collector. Rothelin appears to have been a learned man, and one intimate with the literary elite of the day: Voltaire addressed some verses to him, lauding his taste and "esprit si délicat, si sage" (quoted by Bogeng).
