DELAN, François-Hyacinthe, Abbé (1672-1754) -- Catalogue des livres de la bibliothèque de Monsieur l'Abbé Delan, Docteur et ancien Professeur en Théologie, de la Maison et Société de Sorbonne. Paris: François Didot for Barrois, 3 [corrected in manuscript to 17] February 1755.
8o (194 x 120 mm). Contemporary French quarter calf over marbled boards, edges stained red (some wear). Provenance: A.L. McLaughlin (bookplate).
One of the largest collections on theology and ecclesiastical law, if not the largest, formed by an individual in eighteenth-century France on those subjects. Abbé Delan had a somewhat volatile ecclesiastical career: professor at the Sorbonne, he was exiled for his Jansenist leanings, but having made amends, regained his chair. His good standing did not last long, as he was again involved in Jansenist disputes in 1729, he lost it for good and spent the rest of his life in semi-retirement which may have afforded him the leisure to build up his library. There are a number of contemporary bibliographical notes on the front flyleaf and in the text, including the correct attribution of lot 1,889 to Delan, whose name does not appear in the index, possibly because he was considered heterodox. North 118; Peignot, p.94.
