GIRARDOT DE PREFOND, Paul (d. ca. 1800) -- Guillaume-François DEBURE (1731-1782). Catalogue des livres du cabinet de Mr. G..D..P... Paris: Didot for Guillaume-François Debure, 25 April-9 May 1757.

8o (196 x 125 mm). Contemporary French red morocco, triple gilt fillets round sides, spine gilt, green morocco lettering piece, the compartment at the foot skilfully replaced with a panel of contemporary red morocco bearing the gilt arms of a French duke, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Provenance: Mr de Laplane de Mazières (stencilled bookplate).

PRICED in a contemporary hand of "one of the most celebrated book collections of the 18th century" (Escoffier). On his retirement from his work as a timber merchant, Girardot became depressed. His doctor, Hyacinthe Baron, himself an important collector, advised him to cure his melancholia by forming a library. Debure's well-executed, and finely printed, catalogue reveals the fruits of Girardot's labors. According to Guigard, many of the books were bound by Padeloup. One of the principal buyers was the Duc de La Vallière. Soon after having sold his collection, Girardot embarked upon forming a second, even finer one, which in 1769 he sold for 50,000 frs to Count Mac-Carthy. The last page of the catalogue offers "Machines de Physique": globes and pictures. Blogie II, col. 8; G. Brunet 464 ("collection formée avec beaucoup de goût"); Graesse II, p.70; North 135; Peignot, p.100; Pollard & Ehrman 287; Taylor, p.256.
