LOLLIÉE, Procureur de la Chambre des Comptes -- Catalogue des livres précieux du Cabinet de feu M. Lolliée. Paris: Guillaume Debure l'aîné, 1790, sale 10 January 1791.

8o (208 x 123 mm). Bound for A.-A. Renouard by Pierre-Alexis Bradel aîné in contemporary Parisian green morocco richly gilt, broad roll-tooled borders on sides, in the lower border the name Renouard stamped in gilt, smooth spine in 6 compartments, lettered in the second, the others with stylized fountain tool at center, pink watered-silk endleaves, second pair of vellum endleaves, edges gilt (few repairs along joints, some minor edgewear); green cloth folding case.

Provenance: Antoine-Augustin Renouard (binding, catalogue 1819, vol. IV, p. 258; his sale 1854, lot 3,459); J. Gibson Craig (signature on flyleaf, his sale, part I, 1887, lot 1,593); Robert Hoe (bookplate); Maurice Escoffier (bookplate); A.L. McLaughlin (bookplate, his sale Sotheby's Monaco, 7 October 1980, lot 1,438).

A.-A. RENOUARD'S COPY, BOUND FOR HIM. PRICED THROUGHOUT, probably by Renouard himself. "Somptueux exemplaire de cette belle collection" (Escoffier, No. 204). Renouard, who attended the sale at the age of 25, notes that this is ONE OF TWO COPIES ON LARGE VéLIN PAPER. Lolliée, about whom nothing appears to be known apart from what the title reveals, was especially interested in the first and best editions of the classics, some of which he had acquired, according to the preface, at the Gouttard and La Vallière sales. Though unsigned, the binding is by Bradel Aîné, nephew and successor of Derome le Jeune, who was one of Renouard's favorite binders; it has the characteristic second pair of endleaves of vellum which Renouard had employed in the bindings of his more valuable books commissioned by him. Blogie II, col. 18; North 348; Peignot, p.110; Pollard & Ehrman 300; BBB Wittockiana 21. A VERY FINE COPY WITH A DISTINGUISHED PROVENANCE.
