GINGUENÉ, P.-L. (1748-1816) -- Catalogue des livres de la bibliothèque de feu M. P.-L. Ginguene. Paris: Jacques-Simon Merlin, February 1817.
8o (213 x 133 mm). Contemporary marbled paper wrappers. Provenance: early unidentified inscription summarizing the library on half-title.
The sale of this library, tentatively fixed in the "Avis" for February, 1818, if no buyer could be found, was sold en bloc to the British Museum. Most important is the collection of Italian books, separately catalogued by the late owner himself in Italian, and separately listed in the second section of 1,675 lots. At various times "Commissaire de l'Instruction Publique," member of the Tribunal, ambassador to Turin, and professor of Italian literature, Ginguené's life was devoted to music and Italian letters. His principal work was a voluminous history of Italian literature. The catalogue remained unknown to Peignot, Brunet, and G. Brunet, and was lacking in their libraries. Blogie II, col. 33; North 569.
