SILVESTRE DE SACY, Baron Antoine-Isaac (1758-1838) -- Bibliothèque de M. le Baron Silvestre de Sacy. Paris, Imprimerie Royale for R. Merlin, 18 April 1843, 6 April 1846, 15 November 1847.

3 volumes, 8o (224 x 135 mm). Contemporary purple marbled boards, blue cloth spines gilt, uncut. Provenance: Col. Mauriée (presentation in vol. I from the editor Merlin); M. Matérants (presentation in vols. II-III from Merlin); Wilfred Merton (bookplate in each volume, some autograph notes loosely inserted).

The library of Silvestre de Sacy was the most important oriental library ever assembled by an individual; this sale catalogue, finely printed by the Imprimerie Royale, has remained invaluable owing to the meticulous descriptions by Merlin (for the printed books) and Grangeret de Lagrainge, Munk, Cahen, Belin, and Abbé Dubois (for the manuscripts). Brunet describes it as "a veritable bibliography of Oriental literature, particularly of Hebrew, Arabic and Persian languages. The titles are transcribed with exactitude, and many are accompanied by interesting notes." The Koran collection "is without a doubt the largest ever formed by a private individual" (G. Brunet). There is a 62-page biography of the collector by Daunou. Blogie II, cols. 52, 59, 63; Brunet V:390. (3)
