DOUBLE, Joseph-Louis- Léopold -- Catalogue de la bibliothèque de M. Léopold Double. Paris: J. Techener, 24 March 1863.
8o (245 x 157 mm). Original wrappers, uncut.
PRICED and with buyers' names in a contemporary hand. One of the special copies on fine paper, with the Table, of the sale catalogue of the small, but extremely choice collection of Léopold Double, originally an artillery officer, later a co-founder of one of the large mediterranean shipping lines, according to Hoefer (under F.J. Double), and the father of "Baron" Lucien Double. The 397 lots realized the extraordinary sum of 272,000 Frs, according to Brunet, Suppl. Blogie II, col. 100.
[With:] DOUBLE, Lucien Or Léon -- Catalogue d'un choix de livres rares et précieux, composant le cabinet de M. Double. Paris: Charles Porquet, 30 May 1881.
8o (243 x 155 mm). Tan buckram, by Ferdinand Bakala, Vienna (a bit soiled). Provenance: E.P. Goldschmidt (initials on spine, a few marginal notes).
PRICED in a contemporary hand. It is not clear to which member of the Double family the 59 lots belonged (sold at the Hôtel Double, 9, Rue Louis-le-Grand, and realizing 45,673 frs.). Escoffier, who owned the copy of the contemporaneous collector Rattier, attributed it to Lucien. The contemporary owner has added in manuscript the occurrence of a number of lots in previous sales and their prices then realized, Goldschmidt added a few later occurrences.
[Bound with:] DOUBLE, "Baron" Lucien -- Catalogue des livres précieux composant le cabinet de feu M. le Baron Lucien Double. Paris: Techener, 22 February 1897. 8o.
As the six-page preface of Georges Vicaire states, this is the sale catalogue of Double's collection first described by the collector himself in the "Cabinet d'un Curieux," plus a few additional items. With a few marginal notes by E.P. Goldschmidt concerning items bought by Robert Hoe and the prices they realized in his 1911-1912 sales. (2)
