Eight catalogues (see also below) bound in one, 8o (220 x 137 mm). Portrait photograph of Capé at beginning of print volume. Late 19th-century quarter cloth, original printed wrappers bound in (back strip almost detached, wear to corners).

PRICED in a contemporary hand. Sale catalogue of the remarkable library of the great Parisian bookbinder, "Relieur de l'Impératrice;" many of the finest books were bound by himself. In 1827 Capé succeed his father-in-law as a porter at the Louvre, where he also worked as a binder in the library. He soon found himself binding books for a distinguished clientèle. In 1848 he left the Louvre and established himself at 16, rue Dauphine. The catalogue of Capé's library is preceded by his biography by Jules Janin, that of his prints &c. by a eulogy by J.-E. Vignères, the noted printseller. The photograph of the binder-collector, inserted following the title-page of the print catalogue, is signed by Vignères; it appears to be the only portrait of him.
