GARDE, F. (b. 1818) -- Catalogue de la Bibliothèque illustrée de M. F. Garde. Paris: Bachelin-Deflorenne, 13 December 1869.

8o (265 x 175 mm) Contemporary half cloth and marbled sides by Romain Raparlier, signed with his initials uncut (wear to edges). Provenance: Garde (bookplate); Romain Raparlier (presentation inscription signed by Garde).

PRICED in a contemporary hand, limited issue, one of 10 copies on Papier de Hollande, according to a contemporary note. Presentation copy by Garde, to "Monsieur Raparlier, relieur-artiste." Garde, a printer by profession, was principal editor of the periodical L'Imprimerie; his collection, "unique, assurément, dans son genre" (Preface), was especially rich in illustrated books of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Among his favored binders was Raparlier and the little-known Behrends, a German working in Paris. According to Blogie, a second (posthumous?) sale took place in June, 1872. Blogie II, col. 118.
