FRANCHETTI, Baron -- Catalogue d'un joli choix de livres rares et précieux, reliés en maroquin ancien et moderne. Paris: Georges Chamerot for Charles Porquet, 2 June 1890.

Large 4o (293 x 229 mm). 11 photogravure plates of historic bindings, one double-page, 2 reproductions in the text, title in red and black. Contemporary half sheep, marbled boards, black leather lettering piece on spine. Provenance: bookplate with initials "N.P."

Edition de luxe, on large handmade paper, of the sale catalogue of a "cabinet" remarkable for its outstanding bindings, among them a Grolier (Austin 434/5 - Hoe sale II, 269, mentioning Baron Franchetti as a provenance), a François I (Pontanus, 1505), and bindings with the arms of Henri IV and Ely Dufresnoy (ex Laroche-Lacarelle); among the French eighteenth-century bindings were three inlaid volumes, two by Padeloup le Jeune and one by Devers (Michon 61, 62 & 193). The banker Abramo Franchetti of Treviso and Venice was created Baron by Vittorio-Emanuele II in 1858 (see Crollalanza); he or a son of his was no doubt the owner of this collection. A second part ("Baron F.") was sold, also by Porquet, on 10 March, 1898. Blogie II, col. 196 ("Franchetti").
