JÖCHER, Christian Gottlieb (1694-1758) -- Catalogus bibliothecae D. Christiani Gottlieb Ioecheri. Leipzig: U. Ch. Saalbach, 5 February 1759 to 22 October 1759.
2 volumes, 8o (192 x 120 mm; 168 x 102 mm). Vol. I in contemporary sprinkled paste-paper boards, uncut (spine a bit worn); Vol. II in contemporary half calf, spine gilt (some wear).
BOTH VOLUMES PRICED in a contemporary hand. Sale catalogue of the extraordinary library of Jöcher, the Leipzig polymath and lexicographer who is best known for his Allgemeines Gelehrten-Lexikon (1750-1751), the massive four-volume biographical dictionary containing some 76,000 entries. The existence of Jöcher's library and its catalogue have remained unknown to all bibliographers and biographers except for two: Adelung, in his supplement to Jöcher's Gelehrtenlexikon, states that Jöcher collected an excellent library; Buzas mentions that his library was sold in 1759, but obviously had only seen Vol. I of the catalogue, as he states that it consisted of 4,218 volumes. Blogie V, cols. 3-4. (2)
