THOMASIUS, Gottfried (1660-1746) -- Georg Wolfgang PANZER (1729-1804). Sale catalogue of the library of Gottfried Thomasius, one of the largest formed by a German 18th-century scholar. It consists of 27,251 lots, which, however, describe many more items, as many lots consist of up to ninety different works, each individually listed and numbered within them, though in the much less frequent cases of multi-volume works, each is allotted a separate lot number. Vol. I catalogues 6,118 lots of theology, Vol. II book on law (577 lots) and the "Bibliotheca Medica" (4,842 lots), including books on botany, physics, the natural sciences, chemistry and alchemy; Vol. III (15,713 lots) philosophy, history, and philology. Panzer, the most important German bibliographer of his time, was at that time deacon of St. Sebald's in Nuremberg. All his notes are in Latin. According to Panzer's introduction in Vol. I Thomasius was a doctor of medicine in Leipzig. His library was kept for many years by his youngest daughter, "Virgo Maria Regina Thomasia."
