COPENHAGEN, Royal Library -- Peder Lauridsen SCAVEN (ca 1623-1685). Designatio librorum in qualibet facultate, materia & lingua rariorum tum quoad librorum... Copenhagen: Christian Werin, 1665.
4o (180 x 152 mm). (Title-page slightly browned.) Late 18th-century vellum over boards, leather ties.
The first published catalogue of any portion of the Royal Library at Copenhagen, the largest in Scandanavia. Scavenius was a professor of law at the University of Copenhagen, who accumulated an extensive personal library. The Royal Library was founded by King Frederick III in 1665 with the acquisition of the libraries of Gersdorff, Ulfeldt and Scavenius. As somewhat of an afterthought, the compiler includes a list of anonyma and pseudonyma on pp. 371-376. This listing of 102 names and titles comprises the first bibliographical treatment of anonyma and pseudonyma. An introductory poem by Vitus Bering celebrates Scavenius and the founding of the Royal Library by Vitus Bering. Taylor & Mosher, Bibliographical History of Anonyma and Pseudonyma (Chicago, 1851).
