Sale catalogue of selections from the ancestral libraries at Blickling Hall, Norfolk, and Newbattle Abbey, Midlothian, of the eleventh Marquess of Lothian, British statesman and admired ambassador to Washington, 1939-1940 (see DNB). "The small collection of thirty-five mancscripts and one hundred thirty-three books described in this catalogue is the most valuable and interesting to be sold by auction in this country since the Robert Hoe sales of 1911 and 1912" (De Ricci, from the Foreword--he also catalogued the manuscripts). The catalogue is arranged into three groups: manuscripts, early printed books, and early books on America, etc. The eighth century Lincoln Psalter, was sold to Rosenbach for $23,000; the Blickling Homilies in Anglo-Saxon, dated 971, for $55,000 to B.J. Beyer; the early fourteenth century Tikytt Psalter, $61,000 to Rosenbach (now in the Spencer Collection, New York Public Library). Colard Mansion's 1476 Boccaccio, the first dated book printed at Bruges, and the first dated one illustrated with copperplates (here colored) sold for $45,000 to Beyer. The entire sale realized $410,545. PRICED WITH BUYERS' NAMES in a neat hand.
