The serpentine-fronted moulded rectangular grey and red veined marble top above two long drawers inlaid sans traverse with scrolling strapwork, above a waved apron, flanked by scrolled foliate angle mounts, above splayed legs terminating in similarly cast sabots, partially remounted, the handles marked to the reverse with crossed swords and dated 1762

Lot Essay

Although it is tantalising to interpret the crossed sword mark on the back of the handles as a possible Dresden provenance, there is as yet no basis for this.
The elegant proportions and inlays of this commode are very close to the French prototype, however the mounts and the all oak carcass, and construction firmly point to a German provenance.
