The following two drawings are one from a series of six works which the artist created at the same time under the title Decomposition of Man. In the series, the figure's face is transformed from literal renderings to abstract compositions. The man's eyes, nose and toothy smile morph into bold, abstract gestural strokes in de Kooning's signature style.
