Lot Essay

Doré is thought of as the most popular and successful French book illustrator of the mid 19th century, examples of which are Dante's Inferno (1861), Don Quixote (1862), and the Bible (1866). His work is characterized by a love of the grotesque, popular at the time. Works of London executed in 1869-71 were more sober studies of the poorer quarters of the city and captured the attention of Van Gogh. His works are held in the Louvre, Versailles, and The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Strasbourg to name but a few.
