Regarded by many in the USA as one of the principal representatives of Impressionism, Harrison studied at the Beaux Arts de Paris under Gérome and Bastien-Lepage. He showed his works in the Galerie Georges Petit, frequented by Rodin and Monet, and spent time at Montparnasse. He is well known for his Breton marines. He was a friend of Proust.
