Lot Essay

Landelle registered at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts on 2 October 1837 as the pupil of Paul Delaroche and made his debut at the Salon in 1841. His early work alternated between sentimental religous works, and pictures of pretty girls. Landelle achieved his greatest popularity during the Second Empire and was patronised by both the Dutch King and the Emperor Napoleon III.
