A student of Pils at the school of fine arts, he began as a painter of Historical subjects, though quickly changed his work, instead preferring plein air painting. He spent time in Saône-sur-Loire, Auvergne and in Charolais. Nancy museum conserves one of his works titled Marché aux cochons à Aigueperse
