FINE ARMORIAL BINDINGS FOR THE COMTESSE D'ARTOIS: contemporary Parisian gold-tooled red morocco, triple fillet round sides, arms of the Comtesse d'Artois in the center (Olivier 2517, this block the smaller version of fer 3), floral and other small tools and a hunting roll in compartments of the spine, green morocco lettering pieces, roll-tooled turn-ins, blue endpapers, gilt and marbled edges, (very slight wear to a few corners). Provenance: Marie-Thérèse de Savoie (1756-1805), married in 1773 the Comte d'Artois, the future King Charles X -- Edouard Rahir (bookplate, his Paris sale, part I, 1930, lot 133).
The much enlarged, combined edition of the first two French national bibliographies (see previous lot), revised by Rigoley de Juvigny (the editor of Alexis Piron), who added his own Discours sur le progrès des Lettres en France and relevant texts of President Boutier of the Académie française and Falconet of the Académie des Belles-Lettres.
This set has a most distinguished, royal provenance, its armorial bindings in BRIGHT CONDITION. The Comtesse d'Artois' library was rated among the first of her time, having been formed by her secretary Félix Nogaret. BBB Wittockiana 15.
