ALBERICI, Giacomo (d. 1610, Augustinian Hermit). Catalogo breve de gl'illustri et famosi Scrittori Venetiani ... dedicato al Sereniss. Doge di Venetia Marino Grimani. Bologna: heirs of Giovanni Rossi for Giacomo Zoppini and Brothers of Venice, 1605.
4o (213 x 148 mm). Roman and italic types. Each page within frame of typographical rules, other type ornaments, woodcut vignettes and initials. Painted ornamental title-border in gold and blue, title device colored, six lines of title heightened in gold and red.
BOUND IN VENICE FOR PRESENTATION BY THE PUBLISHER TO THE DOGE: densely gold-tooled russet morocco, interlacing ribbons enamelled in black and white, the resulting compartments filled with foliate and floral tooling, the Ducal arms in center oval enamelled in white and red, floral tooling in compartments of spine, tooled board-edges, gilt leaf-edges, (ties removed, minor repair to joints and spine, paint faded). Provenance: the dedicatee, Doge Marino Grimani of Venice (r. 1595-1605), illuminated and bound for him -- Detailed 18th-century manuscript notes, correcting and augmenting the text -- Ing. Roberto Almagia (bookplate).
THE DEDICATION COPY OF THE FIRST BIBLIOGRAPHY OF VENETIAN LITERATURE, illuminated and bound for the 89th Doge of Venice, Marino Grimani, to whom the printed dedication is addressed by the publisher Zoppini. Italy being divided in countless small states benefitted from few national bibliographies until quite late, with the notable exception of Doni's Libraria (1550). On the other hand, the 17th century saw a remarkable crop of Italian regional bibliographies, most of them substantial and valuable works, of which Alberici's Venetian bibliography was the second earliest (after Poccianti's bibliography of Florentine writers, 1589). Besterman, Beginnings p. 42; BBB Wittockiana 2; BBB Harvard 11.
