THE PRAGUE VOLUME OF SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY CATALOGUES -- Collection of 16 printed catalogues, mostly trade, mostly Parisian or Netherlandish, 1619-1650, all but one 4o (211 x 154 mm)
BINDING: second half 17th century, vellum over thin wooden boards, overlapping fore-edges, top of spine inscribed in ink: "R.R. Ludovici Iacob Biblio//graphia Parisina. & Cata-//logus Bibliothecae Lugdu-/ no-Batavae," below a bold shelfmark: "D//551." PROVENANCE: Prague, Augustinian Hermits, monastery of St. Thomas (where or for whom the volume may have been bound, 17th-century engraved bookplate). Its library goes back to the 14th century, rapidly expanding in the Rudolfine age. St. Thomas, both convent and church, continued to flourish under Ferdinand III and Leopold I. The institution was dissolved under the communists, when the most precious books were removed to the Klementinum.
The Prague volume contains a seemingly haphazard collection of catalogues, which were presumably bound together because they were more or less of the same size. There are bibliographies, institutional and private catalogues, booktrade and auction catalogues, and perhaps most interestingly an unrecorded print publisher's catalogue. What they all share is extreme rarity and, once assembled, the volume's survival must be credited to its stoutness on the monastic shelf.
1) Louis JACOB de Saint-Charles (1608-70), Carmelite of Châlons-sur-Saône. Bibliographia Parisina, hoc est, Catalogus omnium librorum Parisiis annis 1643 & 1644 inclusive excussorum. Paris: Rolet Le Duc, 1645. Collation: a4 (title, dedication to Gabriel Naudé) i2 o2; A-Z2 (bibliography); Aa-Dd2 (appendix). (Hole in inner blank margin of a1-2, some stains.) The first volume of THE FIRST ANNUAL BIBLIOGRAPHY, and the first catalogue to be called bibliography. It covers all Parisian publications. Breslauer & Folter 55.
2) JACOB. Bibliographia Gallica universalis ... 1643, 1644 & 1645. Paris: Le Duc, 1646. Collation: a4; a-c4 d2. (Closely cut.) The first annual bibliography of French printing centers outside Paris.
3) JACOB. Bibliographia Parisina 1645. Paris: Le Duc, 1646. Collation: a4 e4 i4; A-F4 G2. (Foxing.) The second volume of the Parisian annual.
4) JACOB. Bibliographia Gallica universalis 1646. Paris: widow of Jean Camusat and Pierre Le Petit, 1647. Collation: a2 e4; A-Q2. The next annual, this time combining Paris and the provinces.
5) JACOB. Bibliographia Parisina 1647 & 1648. Paris: Sebastien & Gabriel Cramoisy, 1649. Collation: a2 e2 i2; A-N2. The fourth Parisian annual.
6) LEYDEN -- Daniel HEINSIUS (1580-1655, editor). Catalogus Bibliothecae Publicae Lugduno-Batavae. Leyden: Elzevier Press (Abraham and Bonaventura), 1640. Collation: *2 (title, quotation from Pliny bk. 35 ch. 2 on libraries); A-Z Aa-Bb4 (catalogue, quire B lacking), *Cc2 (appendix, misbound in place of B); Cc-Dd4 (Daniel Heinsius' oration to the curators of the University on the librarian's role); \kp\KI (title Libri MSS. Arabici, quos ex Oriente advexit I. Golius), a-c4 (catalogue of Golius's Arabic books, -c4=\kp\K1). The fifth catalogue (first: 1595) of Leyden University Library, whose access was public. The catalogue of the Arabic books, which Golius brought from his travels and are still together, is of the highest importance. INTERLEAVED COPY with contemporary annotations, including some in the Golius section. Pollard and Ehrman p. 256 and 258, table XXX(A), recording copies at BL and Bodley.
7) Johannes GALLE (1600-76). Antwerp: Jean Galle, [mid-17th-century]. Collation: A-B4 C2. UNRECORDED PRINT CATALOGUE, in two columns (Latin and French). The Galle family were print dealers as much as artists. This catalogue, which offers works by all the famous Flemish graphic artists, has appparently not been studied.
8) Johannes Jacobus PORSIUS. Catalogus universalis omnium librorum in bibliopolio Francofurtano prostantium. Frankfurt: 1619. Collation: A-B4 C2. Roman type for Latin books, gothic for German. (Foxed.) UNRECORDED BOOKSELLER'S CATALOGUE. The Porsius firm was active both in publishing and bookselling.
9) Johann RULAND (d. 1643). Index sive catalogus librorum, qui apud Rulandios reperiuntur. Frankfurt: Johann Friedrich Weiss for Ruland publishers, 1626. Collation: A4. Ruland was a family firm; Johann published jointly with his brothers whom he survived, then with his sons. No other catalogue is known to have been issued by them.

UNRECORDED INVENTORY of the library of a deceased canon at Scala, archbishopric of Amalfi. The books presumably came for sale.
11) Catalogue de livres. [? Paris: mid-17th century]. Collation: A-K2. Drop-title. Woodcut headpiece incorporating the Royal arms of France and Navarre. (Presumably lacking preliminaries.)
12) Johannes de LAET (1582-1649, geographer, historian of the West India Company). Catalogus bibliothecae D. Joannis de Laet, Antwerpiani. Quorum auctio habebitur in aedibus Hackii 27 Aprilis, Anno 1660. Leyden: Franciscus Haack, 1650. Collation: A-F4 G1 (lacking A2, G1 bound in its place, several small tears). Auction sale catalogue of the important library of a distinguished geographer, who as a protestant had fled his native Antwerp for Leyden. Copies are recorded at Antwerp, Paris and Leipzig.
13) Jean-Pierre CAMUS (1584-1652, Bishop of Belley) -- Catalogue des livres de M. I.P. Camus Evesque De Belley, qui sont imprimez & qui s'impriment. Paris: Jacques Villery and Gervais Alliot, [c. 1645]. Collation: 12. Italic type, double column. (Stained.) Publishers' catalogue of the prodigious output in various literary fields of the Bishop of Belley. Cioranescu (17690) cites the 4-page catalogue as the only bibliography of Camus' works.
14) ALBERTUS MAGNUS (1193-1280) -- Index operum B. Alberti Magni ... desumptus ex ijs quae R.P.F. Bernardinus Gausolinus in laudem dicti Alberti typis dedit Anno 1630. 16) ELZEVIER PRESS -- Catalogus librorum officinae Elsevirianae. [Leyden: Abraham and Bonaventura Elzevier], 1644. Collation: A4. Drop-title, with printed prices (outer margins cropped, affecting text). Fourth publisher's catalogue of the Leyden branch, advertising their books in print as well as some of the Amsterdam house. ONLY ONE OTHER COPY RECORDED: Pieters Collection (1884 sale, lot 903), from which the owner published a reprint. An important catalogue for the fact that the prices are stated. Willems 4.
