BEUGHEM, Cornelius à (c. 1637-c. 1710). Incunabula Typographie sive Catalogus Librorum Scriptorumque proximis ab inventione Typographiae annis, usque ad Annum Christi M.D. inclusive, in quavis linguâ editorum. Amsterdam: Johannes Wolters, 1688.
Bound after: BEUGHEM. Bibliographia Mathematica. Accedit Cosmographiae sive Atlantis Majoris tam Blaviani quam Janssoniani brevis Conspectus harmonicè exhibitus. Amsterdam: Janssonius van Waesberge, 1688.
12o (125 x 74 mm). Two works bound in one volume. (Incunabula without final blank, preliminaries in Mathematica misbound, some browning.) 18th-century German calf, red edges, (binding rubbed, bookplate removed).
Two epochal works by the tireless 17th-century Dutch bibliographer, Cornelis van Beughem, issued in the same year by two different publishers and here united in a single volume. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST BIBLIOGRAPHY OF INCUNABULA. It is arranged in alphabetical order by authors; a short biographical note is then given, followed by the title of the work, place of printing and date, the number of volumes if applicable and often the format. Occasionally the printer is also given (Fust and Schoeffer Cicero, Ratdolt Euclid). At the end are appendices of anonymous texts and undated editions. More than 3,000 entries may be counted in Beughem, well over 10 of the total number of incunable editions now known. The Breslauer copy contains both the cancel and cancelled titles. Breslauer & Folter 85.
FIRST EDITION of the first comprehensive bibliography of books on mathematics, astronomy, physics, geography and applied sciences (navigation, music, medicine, etc.) published in Latin and the vernacular from 1651 onwards. A particularly interesting appendix gives the detailed contents of the great world atlases by Blaeu and Janssonius, which had reached their completion not long before. Breslauer & Folter 84.
