ORIGINAL MADRID BINDING BY ANTONIO DE SANCHA (unsigned, but see Matilde Lopez Serrano, Biblioteca del Palacio 1950, pl. 25): gold-tooled red morocco, outer border of drawer-handles framing a handsome dentelle of small floral tools, drawer-handles, dots, etc, arms-block of Charles III of Spain in the center, spine decorated in compartments with floral tools, blue morocco lettering pieces, roll-tooled board-edges, marbled endpapers, gilt leaf-edges, (top corners somewhat worn). Provenance: a member of the King's entourage (Royal arms on binding).

FIRST EDITION of this finely produced catalogue of the Greek manuscripts in the King's library, to which the author as Royal Librarian had added thousands of books, manuscript and printed. Iriarte died before he could complete the project and no more volumes were published. Antonio de Sancha (1720-90) was the outstanding binder of his time, surpassed only by his son Gabriel (1746-1820). Palau 121118; BBB Wittockiana 12.
