[MOREAU, Jacob-Nicolas (1717-1804).] Bibliothèque de Madame la Dauphine. No. I. Histoire. Paris: Michel Lambert for Saillant & Nyon, and Moutard, "Librairie de Madame la Dauphine", 1770-71.
8o (192 x 121 mm). Collation: engraved frontispiece by Charles Eisen, showing Marie-Antoinette surrounded by the Three Graces and being presented the book by Clio; A-L8 M4 (M4 errata).
PARISIAN ARMORIAL BINDING OF C. 1771 FOR THE CROWN PRINCE OF FRANCE (from 1774 King Louis XVI): gold-tooled red morocco, triple fillet round sides, fleur-de-lys at the angles, arms of Louis XVI as dauphin (Olivier 2528 fer 6) in the center, floral tooling and green morocco lettering-piece on flat spine, turn-ins roll-tooled, gilt edges, marbled endpapers. Cloth folding case. Provenance: Louis-Auguste of France (b. 1754, dauphin 1765, married 1770 Marie-Antoinette, daughter of Empress Maria-Theresa, King 1774, guillotined 1793) -- Louis Roederer (S. de Ricci, The Roederer Library pp. 15 and 20) -- Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach (1876-1952, bookseller), pencil inscription -- Raphael Esmerian (Paris sale, part 3, 1973, lot 9).
HIGHLY IMPORTANT ROYAL ASSOCIATION COPY of Moreau's introduction to the study of history and reading list of historical works, compiled for the use and education of the young Marie-Antoinette (1755-1793), dauphine since 16 May 1770). This attempt to acquaint the 15-year old foreign princess with the long history of her new country was not in vain, as she became an ardent reader and bibliophile, owner of considerable libraries at the Tuileries and Versailles. Moreau was her official librarian and the royal historiographer of France.
Other reading guides on poetry, drama and other literature were planned, but never realized. Marie-Antoinette's own copy of this theoretical catalogue is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and her sisters-in-law, Madame Elisabeth and the Comtesse de Provence, also owned copies bound in red morocco.
