CONTEMPORARY FRENCH ARMORIAL BINDING: gold-tooled red morocco, triple fillets on sides, arms-block of Jules-François de Cotte (Olivier 601, different version) in the center, compartments of spine decorated with small tools and green morocco lettering pieces, roll-tooled turn-ins, gilt edges. Modern folding cloth box. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST SYSTEMATIC GUIDE TO COLLECTING PRINTS, blockbooks and the earliest illustrated printed books. The author was a minister at the Court of Saxony, director of the Dresden Print Cabinet, and the owner of one of the finest private collections in Germany of woodcuts and engravings. FINE ASSOCIATION COPY from the library of one of the greatest private collectors in France, who had purchased -- jointly with C.-R. Boutin -- the great De Boze collection en-bloc, had a real interest in illustrated books and the graphic arts, and whose 1804 auction sale saw record prices.
