PRESENTATION BINDINGS BY BIANCHI (signed on spines): gold-tooled red straight-grained morocco, three roll-produced borders on sides, crowned cypher of Eugène de Beauharnais and his wife Augusta Amalia, Princess of Bavaria, in center, flat spine decorated in compartments, roll-tooled ornament on board-edges and turn-ins, silk liners, leaf-edges uncut. Provenance: Eugène de Beauharnais (1781-1824, Napoleon's stepson, then adopted son, Viceroy of Italy 1805-14, 1815 created Duke of Leuchtenberg and Prince of Eichstätt), printed presentation inserted before frontispiece in vol. 1, cypher on binding -- Georgij, Duke of Leuchtenberg (1872-1929), by descent, his library sale in Milan 1935, lot 77.

The printed inscription reads: "A Son Altesse le Prince Eugène dont le nom glorieux est gravé au temple de mémoire, l'auteur offre ce témoignage de respect et d'admiration". The presentation binding is signed by Bianchi, whose atelier may have stood in Parma, but about whom nothing seems to be recorded. Beauharnais married the daughter of Maximilian I, King of Bavaria, in 1806. Their joint cypher appears on the covers. As viceroy, Beauharnais had been a principal patron of Bodoni's press.
