INLAID ARMORIAL BINDING BY ANTONIO GIL FOR GOMEZ DE LA CORTINA, Madrid c. 1860: gold-blocked russet hard-grain morocco, large cathedral-style cornerpieces inlaid with green morocco on the covers, owner's coronetted monogram in upper and lower borders, his arms-block in the center and scrolls lettered with his motto and the "et amicorum" ownership inscription, all inlaid with green morocco, compartments of spine outlined with blind fillets, gilt lettering, roll-tooled turn-ins, imitation-silk endpapers, edges gilt and gauffered and heightened with colors, signed with a blind stamp on flyleaf, (color of the spine and to a lesser degree of the front cover faded). Provenance: Joachim Gómez de la Cortina, Marqués de Morante (1808-68), arms and bookplate -- Armand Ripault (bookplate, Paris sale, 1924, lot 324) -- Maurice Escoffier (no. 91 in his mimeographed catalogue) -- Raphaël Esmerian (bookplate, not in his Paris sale, but sold privately to B.H. Breslauer).
ONE OF THE 25 COPIES PRINTED ON LARGE WOVE PAPER ("un des 25 exemplaires en tirage réimposé sur grand papier vélin" -Escoffier). "Charles Nodier, librarian of the Arsenal, a leader of the Romantic movement and a prolific littérateur, exercised a tremendous influence on the book collecting tastes of his time; he himself formed three exquisite collections, each of which he had to part with" (BBB Wittockiana). When he died on 27th January 1844, Nouveaux Mélanges was in proof stage. An abridged version was then issued as an auction catalogue (27 April 1844), as well as this definitive text edited by Duplessis of the Bulletin du Bibliophile, supplemented with an introduction, a life of Nodier by Francis Wey, a bibliography of his writings, and a price-list of the sale. Nodier's third library was expressly strong in obscure and ephemeral texts, plaquettes and popular literature, such as will only survive through the interest of amateurs; these would as a matter of course be disbound and sent to Koehler and Thouvenin for washing, pressing and gilt morocco.
The Marqués de Morante was one of Spain's outstanding 19th-century collectors, whose library numbered some 120,000 volumes, many bound by the foremost French and Spanish shops.
