VERY FINE CONTEMPORARY PARISIAN GOLD-TOOLED MOSAIC BINDING BY CHAMBOLLE-DURU: red morocco inlaid with green morocco, outlined in gilt, to an all-over design of repeated geometric compartments filled with gilt floral and arabesque tools and small quadrilobe citron morocco inlays, spine similarly decorated and lettered, gold-tooled green morocco doublures inlaid with maroon morocco, red silk endleaves, marbled flyleaves, gilt edges, signed on front doublure, original gold-printed wrappers. Original slipcase, modern morocco fall-down-back box by Zaehnsdorf. Provenance: Paul Edward Chevalier (bookplate, Christie's NY, 9 November 1990, lot 124).
NO. 6 OF AN EDITION LIMITED TO 150 COPIES, THE FIRST BOOK PUBLISHED BY THE GROLIER CLUB IN THE YEAR OF ITS FOUNDATION. The binding on this copy, beautifully finished, may well have influenced the work and style of the Club Bindery, which was established in 1895 to serve the needs of Grolier Club members. René-Victor Chambolle (1834-98) succeeded Hippolyte Duru on his retirement in 1863 and added the latter's name to his own following his death in 1884. Chambolle fils continued the shop until his death in 1915. BBB Harvard 73.
